Do You Even Need an MSP? An Honest Checklist
Not every business needs a managed service provider. Here’s a straight checklist to decide — from the people who’d rather tell you the truth than sell you a plan.
Most MSP websites are built to convince you that you can’t survive without one. We’d rather you make the right call. Here’s an honest checklist.
You probably don’t need a full MSP yet if…
- You have just a few employees and devices.
- Your tools are mostly cloud apps that manage themselves.
- You can tolerate occasional downtime without losing money.
- Someone on your team is comfortable handling basic IT.
If that’s you, a few good habits — backups, MFA everywhere, and a known number to call when something breaks — may be all you need. We’re glad to set those up as a one-time project.
You probably do need managed IT if…
- Downtime directly costs you revenue or client trust.
- You handle sensitive data (legal, medical, financial).
- You’re past ~10 users and IT is eating someone’s “real” job.
- You’ve been hit by phishing, ransomware, or a close call.
- You can’t confidently say your backups would actually restore.
The in-between
Plenty of businesses live in the middle — they need security and backups handled, but not full-time management. That’s fine; a plan should be right-sized to that, not maxed out. Our services are built to mix and match.
